Start your engines! The Key West, FL, home owned and fixed up by former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. has successfully sold for $3 million.

The legendary driver and his wife, Amy, initially picked up the place in 2009, for $2.4 million. They then got to work on the historic Old Town abode, parts of which date to the 1860s. They also added some custom touches of their own, such as a kitchen with a pirate theme.

With five bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, the 3,306-square-foot abode with an island vibe includes some quirky details, such as a secret, hidden hatch door that enables you to peep in on people in the parlor.

The updated kitchen, built to resemble the inside of a pirate ship, has a large ship’s wheel at the end of the bar. Interior details include wood paneling, exposed ceiling beams, and multiple doors that open outside.

Outside, along with one of the largest and deepest pools in Key West, there’s a gate from the second-floor porch that opens to allow brave souls to jump into the water from a great height. A deck area around the pool is large enough for lounging and dining.

The property also includes a one-bedroom guesthouse that could be converted into a two-bedroom residence should a buyer desire.

It was initially put on the market about a year ago, for $3.7 million, but the price was dropped at the end of last year to $3.4 million, before it sold this month.

“This particular home has a very rich and colorful history,” says the co-listing agent Bob Cardenas. “Now it is in the hands of an amazing couple who cherish its past history and share in and totally appreciate the Earnhardt’s vision. We always knew that this special place was going to be for a very specific type of buyer, and it was in fact the unique pirate theme that solidified their decision to buy this residence.”

Aye, aye, matey! Now that’s certainly a decision we can get behind.

Bob Cardenas and Matt Carlson of Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty represented both the seller and the buyer.
